General characteristics

The new tunnel has the following characteristics:

Length: 5224 ms
Three lanes 3,5 m wide.
Specific speed: 80 km/h
Circulation type: Bidirectional
Maximum slope: 4,57 % from the high point to the North portal; the slopes in the South part are of 0,62 % until the kilometer pint 0+480 and 1.68 % until the high point.
Minimum vertical high: 5,29 m
Circulation width: 12 m (in 3 lanes of 3,50 m)
Two sidewalks of 1,0 m width.
Cross section camber: 2% towards the East side, except in North exit that will be of 4%.
Total section: 127 m2 of excavation, with an overall complete section of 95 m2, and a road section of 78 m2. 
The road surface is concrete to avoid contaminations in fire case.


Safety

One of the most important theme in the project of the new Vielha tunnel will be the safety.

The old tunnel will be reserved for the vehicles with dangerous transports. Also the tunnel will be a evacuation way for people in incidents in the new tunnel.  

As main elements of safety the tunnel included:

Evacuation galleries (cross passages) connected to the present tunnel (each 400 m, 12 in total). Each cross passages have  a 12 m long refuge adjacent to the new tunnel.

Safety niche and fire points  (each 200 m, 25 in total)                                                                                           The tunnel  will be enlarged at 550 m centres to provide eight 30 m long emergency breakdown bays, 3.5 wide .                                                                                       Semi-transverse ventilation system.

Water network against fires Red throughout the tunnel.

Traffic lights, barriers in tunnel portals.  Emergence telephones.

Television cameras  (CCTV), telephony network inside the tunnel.

Fire detection system.

Automatic detection system (DAI).                               .

All the technical management will be centralized and controlled form a new control center, that will be located in the North portal of tunnel.
